Getting to The Root

A guide to common skin conditions

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. Because it covers such a large area, you’re bound to encounter a skin condition at some point. Whether the issue is brief or chronic, there’s no shortage of treatment options for lasting results. Use this guide to get ahead of your complexion woes.

What are some common skin conditions?

Acne

Acne is undoubtedly one of the most common skin problems in the world. It’s the result of hair follicles becoming clogged with oil and dead skin cells. There are two main types of acne: inflammatory and noninflammatory. While symptoms will vary based on the type you have and the severity, a few common ones include: whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples with pus at their centres.

For milder cases, over-the-counter solutions can work wonders! Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, clearing up breakouts quickly and even reducing scarring. Our Golden Hour Face Wash cleanses, exfoliates, and balances the body’s oil production to prevent future breakouts. Be sure to clean the skin at least twice a day to prevent the buildup of acne-causing bacteria and dead skin cells.

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema a group of skin conditions that make the skin irritated. While the exact cause isn’t known, researchers believe it could  have to do with the environment, genetics, and/or immune response.

The condition typically results in a rash on the face, backs of the knees, wrists, hands, and/or feet. Dry, scaly, and itchy skin are typical. If you scratch constantly, this worsens skin inflammation and causes thickened areas. For fair-skinned people, the affected areas might turn red and then brown; for darker-skinned people, the affected area might become lighter or darker.

Some people will experience flare-ups in response to rough fabrics, stress, extreme temperatures, and even harsh beauty products. For example, synthetic fragrances and ethanol in soaps and creams are common triggers.

Opt for natural products whenever possible. An effective home remedy is moisturizing as it eases skin inflammation and puts water back in the skin. For more severe cases, your doctor may prescribe corticosteroid creams and ointments to reduce inflammation.

Rosacea

Rosacea typically affects the face, causing redness in the nose, chin, cheeks, and forehead. Without treatment, redness can intensify and blood vessels might become visible. Like eczema, the exact cause of this skin condition is unknown but a popular theory is that it could result from a disorder of the immune system or neurovascular system. It can be triggered by extreme temperatures, spicy foods, and emotional stress.

In addition to persistent redness, other common symptoms of rosacea include bumps and pimples that may resemble acne. More severe cases might lead to eye irritation, and burning or stinging sensations in the skin.

Research shows that hydrating, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant ingredients (like chamomile, lavender, turmeric, and aloe vera) calm skin inflammation. Try our Stay Gold Facial Elixir. It has two rosacea-fighting ingredients: lavender and turmeric.

When in doubt, go to the doctor.

If over-the-counter solutions don’t provide relief, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor. Your primary care physicians can prescribe medications for skin conditions or even send you to a dermatologist. With a more comprehensive diagnosis, you can find the remedies that bring you lasting comfort and confidence.

Whatever condition you encounter, and whatever solutions you might try, don’t forget to listen to your skin. It might not be able to talk, but that doesn’t mean it can’t communicate. Irritation or no change? That’s not the remedy for you. Smoothness and calm? Keep doing that!
