Autumn skin care: do I need to change my routine?

With autumn around the corner, it’s time to get out your cozy sweaters. While you’re at it, swap your summer skincare products for those that’ll keep your skin soft and glowing in the crisper weather.

But, you might be wondering: Is that really necessary? And, if it is, how should I change my routine? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

How does fall weather affect my skin?

In autumn, the temperature and humidity start to drop. If the air is cold and dry, the water in your skin evaporates faster. Often, heating makes the indoor air even drier. Without the right skincare products, your skin might start to feel tight, red, and flaky.

In some cases, dry skin can lead to acne. Glands beneath the skin produce extra sebum — an oily substance that moisturizes and protects the skin. As sebum and dead skin build-up, they clog your pores.

Dryness can also activate common skin conditions like atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema. This results in an itchy and inflamed complexion.

What can I do about it?

A few small changes to your skin care routine will prepare you for the cooler seasons ahead. Let’s get started with these tips:

Cut back on exfoliator

During the summer, you’ll up your exfoliating game to keep the pores from getting clogged. But, in the fall, the skin’s natural barrier will be damaged, and exfoliation could worsen it. Following a  summer routine could lead to inflammation and hypersensitivity. Depending on your skin type, cut down to 1-2 times a week. When you do exfoliate, opt for a natural scrub that won’t worsen inflammation or breakouts. Or, try using a face mask instead. Time-tested ingredients, like kaolin clay, purify the pores without any harsh scraping and scrubbing.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

Layering is the key to staying warm in colder weather, and to keeping your skin moist and comfortable. Applying layers of nourishing products to the skin will lock in moisture and keep out the pollutants. While a light cream might’ve kept your screen hydrated during the summer, it’s time to step up your game. Start with an elixir. They’re made from smaller molecules that’ll penetrate deep into the skin’s surface for better hydration. Add thicker creams on top to seal in the moisture and protect the outermost layer of skin.

Don't put away your sunscreen

Just because the bright heat of summer is behind us doesn’t mean it’s time to put away your sunscreen. UV rays are constant all year round. Over time, they can damage skin cells and cause skin aging. So, no matter the weather, apply your preferred sunscreen each morning. Chemical sunscreen needs to be applied first thing to be effective, whereas physical sunscreen is applied after moisturizers.

All that being said, routines are never one size fits all. Pay attention to how your skin feels (oily? dry? just right?) and adjust product use accordingly. The only right answer here is what makes you feel great and protected.
